Per Alfred Apollo, born January 10, 1856 at Tidaholm, Hvarf, in Skaraborgsland, emigrated
to the United States from Sweden in 1878. At that time he changed his name to Hallstrom.
He and his brothers came to Keokuk, Iowa by rail, and later he and his brother Otto came to
Crookston. P. A. then walked over the prairie to his brother, Swan Naplin's place, 20 miles
away. He later got a job working as a carpenter for the railroad around Crookston. There
he met Mathilda Sellberg, who had been born in Nedra Kalix, Norrbotten, also in Sweden, on
March 5, 1859. She was employed in Crookston after having left Sweden in 1879 and
remaining in Chicago for about five years. Mathilda and Per Alfred were married in the first
schoolhouse built in District 99, which stood then in the place where it now is. After the
wedding on May 4, 1885, the honeymooners walked to their cabin, which P.A. had built, 2
1/2 miles southwest of the school house. They lived in this cabin about one year and then
moved to an already erected home in the northeast quarter of Section 7. Two children were
born there, Hulda and Alfred.
PIONEER CITIZEN CALLED BY DEATH
P. A. Hallstrom, 86, one of the early pioneer settlers in Polk Center township, and former
resident of this village, died Monday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Oscar Mosbeck, following an illness of about three months.
Born in Skaraborgs lan, Sweden, he spent his youth in that country, coming to the United
States in 1878. Following a brief stay in Iowa, he came to Crookston to follow his trade as
carpenter. He was engaged in that work in all towns on the St. Vincent line as new towns
spring up when the road extended north.
In April, 1885 he was united in marriage to Mathilda Selberg at Crookston. Shortly
thereafter they established their home on the farm in Polk Center. In 1922 Mr. and Mrs.
Hallstrom retired from farming and moved to this village where Mrs. Hallstrom preceded her
husband in death Nov. 5, 1931. Mr. Hallstrom resided here until the following year when he
returned to the old home farm, the scene of his early activities. Mr. Hallstrom is survived by
a family of three daughters and four sons. The children are: Mrs. P. V. Sandberg of
Coronation, Alta., Canada; Mrs. E. V. Egbers of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Oscar Mosbeck;
Alfred, Henry and Harold of Red Lake Falls, and Martin of St. Hilaire. He also is survived by
several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A good friend and neighbor, highly respected by everyone in this section, Mr. Hallstrom will
be missed in this community where he resided for nearly sixty years.
Funeral services will be held Friday, at the Mosbeck home at 1 o'clock with final rites at 2
o'clock at the Black River Swedish Lutheran church of which he and his family had been
members since 1885. Rev. H. A. Larson will officiate, and interment will be in the cemetery
adjoining that church.
